Always Learning
There are students, and there are “lifelong learners”. In most tribal traditions, knowledge is passed on orally, but also by showing others how something is done. Both science and culture have proven that humans are better visual learners than anything – especially in this day of digital media, more people watch than read!
A good friend and ally to the tribe is Mark Suter. Marc is a Texas/Louisiana naturalist, and “primitive wilderness survivalist”. He has also published a great book, Edible Wild Plants of Texas (Non-woody Species). For over 30 years, he has been sharing knowledge of the old ways of doing things that kept people alive and healthy for millennia. Along with his associate, Gary Warrick (also a survivalist, and a Fire Captain), they created the Primitive Texas & Louisiana Survival Company. Teaching classes to various groups, schools, and even consulting for Discovery Channel, CBS, and the History Channel.
Mark is bringing his knowledge to back to Louisiana to share with our tribe, with a fire making class using the “Bow Drill”! This is a unique opportunity to learn a skill our ancestors used to make an efficient and quick fire.
Each student will carve their very own Bow Drill kit from a piece of Bald Cypress wood. We will guide you from start to finish, and also cover effective technique, as well as other alternative woods that work great!
Please bring a fixed blade knife, chair, and a water bottle.
Lunch will be provided.
