Return Of The Xactci Dance
For the first time in 160 years of Louisiana history, the Canneci Tinné Apache Tribe is presenting our sacred Xactci Dance at the Opelousas Museum!
In the early 1800s, Indigenous ceremonies, traditions, and even gatherings were essentially outlawed throughout North America – though often practiced in secret, and far from the general public. On August 11, 1978, a joint resolution of the US Congress passed the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (Public Law No. 95–341, 92 Stat. 469 – signed into Law by President Jimmy Carter) restoring our inherent rights to these cultural practices…one of the reasons Pow Wows are so popular today!
The Canneci Tinné Apache Tribe are proud to present this sacred dance to the public for the first time in many generations, and are grateful to our friends at the Opelousas Museum for their support. Creation of the regalia and the dance presentation were made possible with the generous support of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
